I feel like the only people who can like Peter Pettigrew are those who have created a fanfiction version of him. Canonly, Peter is a horrible traitor who got accepted into a group of people who cared about him, but the 1st chance he got, he betrayed them to someone he thought tougher. He’s an opportunistic coward who spied on the Order for years and then sold out his friends to Voldemort knowing they had a baby, and got Sirius sent to prison for 12 years. He is scum, period.

I don’t think anyone is trying to say that Peter wasn’t a horrible person; it’s pretty clear that he was. There are lots of things to debate in the HP fandom but the fact that Peter Pettigrew is scum isn’t one of them.

People who “like” Peter don’t necessarily actually like him. I mean, I can only really speak for myself but I feel like we writers include him in our Marauders fics because canonically, he was in Gryffindor with the others and canonically, he was a Marauder too, and one of their closest friends. The Marauders weren’t James, Sirius, and Remus + an awkward tag-along kid, the Marauders were the four of them. Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs.

That’s exactly why Peter’s betrayal is so horrible and infuriating, because he was just as much a part of the Marauders as any of the others. No one expected him to do what he did, not James, not Lily, not even Sirius, and that makes it all the more heartbreaking because no one saw it coming, not from Peter. They did accept him. What’s more, they trusted him. They shouldn’t have, but they did, and there had to have been reasons for that. So yeah, he sucks. But writing him into fics as a likable (albeit awkward and shy, etc.) person is actually vital to ultimately creating the proper feelings of horror and disgust about what he did.

No one’s saying he didn’t turn out to be a piece of shit in the end – we’re writing him into fics because it’s important to.

OP is definitely missing the entire point of Peter.

also, i dont think “he betrayed them the 1st chance he got” is fair

he didnt spy on the order for years. i think it was one year max, and the scene in the shack more than clearly shows that peter would have been killed if he hadnt told the death eaters the truth

peter didnt walk into voldemort’s house ( does voldemort has a house ? where did he live? ) and said “heya dark lord i wanna sell you my friends”. it started with little things, like when the order planned an attack, etc… also, voldemort was a skilled legilimens, so to me it probably helped to get peter to feel entirely helpless and completely terrified

peter would have died if he hadnt sold out his friends. now you may think he should have died with honor, protecting his friends, but you cant just assume everyone is brave enough to make this choice.

tdlr : peter didnt betray his friends the first chance he got, he was more likely under extreme mental manipulation and death threats for a long time and just wanted to stay alive. im not saying he’s good, im saying his story is complicated

The Marauders fan life is screaming HOW DARE YOU every five minutes rewatching Prisoner of Azkaban

On the other hand trust Remus John Lupin to sleep half way through a Dementor attack bless him, conjuring up a patronus like ‘here’s a happy memory from the dream you just woke me up from you raggy little shit, I was having a lovely fucking nap until you turned up’

“My dear, you have……………. the Grim” no the fuck he doesn’t he’s got a dogfather friend just waiting to be made, Padfoot is not a Grim he is a Good Boy and my son so you better fucking watch yourself Sybil

Oh okay Remus Lily Evans “was there for you at a time when no-one else was” was she? Was that when the boys who risked expulsion, Azkaban, and death so they didn’t have to leave you alone for the literal one night a month they couldn’t initially be stuck to your side were in detention or…? They spent three years perfecting literally death defying magic so they could be there for you but yeah sure Lily was your sole friend in the dark days and the other Marauders just had a “talent for trouble” fucking sure, Jan.

Bad move, Cuarón. Bad move.

No you know what and another fucking thing she could see “the beauty in others even, or perhaps most especially, when that person could not see it in themselves”? You know what, fair enough: I can buy that about Lily Evans. But don’t you dare pull that line as a contrast to James Potter when at age eleven he found an outwardly feeble and talentless, rodenty-looking kid; a rebellious pureblood from an abusive home, first non-Slytherin of his name; and a poor, scrawny, beaten-up looking werewolf and thought “You’re my new brothers, I’m gonna love you forever now”. This kid picked up probably the three most self-loathing kids he could find, the three who—under other circumstances—probably wouldn’t have had any friends at all, and not only offered them friendship: he variously offered them unconditional support, offered love, offered companionship, protection, a home, a family. He found the three trickiest people to look after and thought “I’m gonna take care of you, no matter what”.

So excuse you script writers but James Potter rocked up on his first day of Hogwarts and immediately formed bonds of friendship and unshakable trust with the three people least capable of seeing their own inner beauty, and maintained that trust literally to his death.

That was exactly what was exceptional about both Lily and James: maybe they saw it in different people, but they both saw light in those who didn’t think, or others didn’t think, they had any light to offer.

This is hands down the best thing on Tumblr today

The only acceptable part of that movie is Snape telling Sirius and Remus that they fight like a married couple. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also Sirius telling Remus to go play with his Chemistry set. Knowing that, not being a Pureblood Wizard, he would know what that was.

i feel like no one on this goddamn website realizes that

the reason why there are only 5 guys and 3 girls in gryffindor in harry’s year is that all of the students were born during or right after a war

people dont have as many kids during a war. kids die during a war.

i can bet you that in the marauders era there was 10 or maybe even 15 gryffindor boys in their year. the wizarding community was probably way bigger at the time.

so everytime i see a hc about “the fifth guy who shared a dorm with them” im always a bit put of bc… maybe there had a dorm to themselves and there was another one with 5 other kid or something. maybe there was 2 or 3 other guys there ( although lets all admit the first one seems more conveniant for fanfics ).

the wizarding community doesnt have a fixed number of kids in each house and this number is certainly not the same a few years before a war and right after

Somebody said that
