You’re allowed to like your writing.

One unfortunate side effect of the “your first draft is shit” rhetoric (which is mostly meant to encourage the understanding that you will need to edit and that having problems in your first draft doesn’t mean you can’t write) is that people tend to feel like they shouldn’t like their writing. They should only be critical of it, only see the flaws of it, and so be unhappy with their writing.

Being critical is good, but keep in mind that you’re not only allowed but encouraged to like what you’ve written. You should like it because that means it’s something people enjoy reading (because you are a person), but also because you will write better if you enjoy what you’re writing. Reread your old writing and smile at the lines that you love. Enjoy your fun scenes, laugh at your own jokes, cry at the tragedies you’ve written particularly poignantly. It’ll make you feel better. I promise.

a few weeks ago, i re-read one of my fic and i was surprised to see how much i loved it?

like sure at some points i was cringing a bit bc of bad wording, etc… but i actually laughed pretty hard at my own jokes? and “awwwwww”-ed at the cute scenes? and gasped at the plot twist, even though i know perfectly well it was coming?

enjoy your own work, kids. love it. be proud of it.

can you believe im fluent enough in english to write fanfics

and to have an entire blog in english

to talk with american people

im actually going to study in english next year

BUT I STILL CANT FUCKING REMEMBER IF THE SECOND DAY OF THE WEEK IS CALLED THURSDAY OR TUESDAY

Reminder that Mcgonagall was only in her 50’s when she taught Harry

Which means she was in her 30’s when she taught the marauders and she was probably gorgeous.

So all of those HCs and chats about the boys flirting with her are probably accurate as fuck lol

okay i usually dont contradict people on their own post but

mcgonagall was an ageless entity sent to us by the wizard god, she neither ages nor die, she always was and always will be the same strict but loveable 50y/o teacher

like, i totally appreciate that HP fandom is still so intense and all the creativity that still gets poured into it, nearly 20 years after the first book came out, but ngl every time i see one of those edits with the original Marauders being represented by like, some impossible perfect Millenial instagram models with artfully tousled hair and pouty lips it always throws me bc those dudes were in their prime in late 1970′s england aka an era when looking like a led zeppelin reject was about the peak of popular young male hotness

like you know this is what they looked like, don’t try to fight it

let me tell you about something that happened for me in the last few days

you often hear people say “i cant use your pronouns, it’s just too difficult !”

well my friend AD had this problem : she was very respectful of my gender and the words i chose to use about myself, but she had issues with my pronouns (the ones i use in french). she thought they were difficult to pronounce, and in the end the whole stuttering on pronouns things was just a bit awkward.

what she did is that she researched other gender neutral pronouns and asked me if it would be okay for her to use those instead. when she told me what those alternative pronouns were, i was a bit disappointed bc they sounded very feminine. i told her that and she asked me if she could use yet another set that she found. i found this one both perfectly neutral and practical and agreed.

the highlights :

  • my friend AD knew she was having a hard time with my pronouns and actively searched for a way to solve the problem while always being mindful of my comfort with the situation
  • she was the one who did all the researching : she didnt just come to me to ask me to change my pronouns, she did the job herself bc she thought it was her own issue
  • she was ready to accept a plain “no”. had i told her my set of pronouns was the only one i wanted to use, she would have listened and respected my choice

.

so, you know, next time you feel like saying someone’s pronouns are too difficult for you, maybe do what AD did and try to solve the problem instead of just giving up on the issue

( PS : for my french followers, my pronouns are “iel” and the one AD is using is “lei” )
