thoughts about the slytherin house

i’ve
seen a LOT of discourse about the slytherin house, from calling them
all bigots or the innocent victims of discrimination because “they were
a few bad ones” and i just want to share my opinion on the issue

in
the book, literally almost every single slytherin we meet was a
bigoted asshole. they also, correct me if i’m wrong, all came from
rich pureblood families were at least halfbloods with a strong connection to a pureblood family )

the
only good slytherins i can name at the top of my head are andromeda
and regulus. we have a few grey characters as well, like slughorn,
but they are, well, grey. and those two good characters ? were
originally bigoted asshole who changed.

so
do we conclude they are only assholes in slytherin ? no ! i have more
thoughts

in
all the books, the pressure on pureblood kids to land in slytherin is
made very clear, and that makes sense ! Pureblood families are
rich, and rich families, whether fictional or real, tend to push
their kids toward excellence. It makes sense they would value
ambition so much.

And
then, since they are very traditional familes – may i remind
everyone the slytherin house is supposed to value traditions – they
ask for everyone in their family to remain in slytherin. So the
result is clear : we have an entire hogwarts house that every
rich bigoted pureblood kid join. That means a lot of bigotry all
together in one place.

What
would happen if a muggleborn kid had a great slytherin personnality,
and went there ? Things would be awful for them ! They
would be rooming all year long with people who were taught they are
inferior, invaders, etc… that is a terribly unsafe position to be
in. kids can be cruel. and even more so when we know they were a lot
of older slytherins who were already death eater in their last
years ! ( draco, regulus, probably snape, and a lot more who
were only background characters )

i
know hogwarts top priority isn’t the safety of its students ( it’s
more something like “how many extremely dangerous creatures
can i stash in a single room ?” ) but really ? would
you let a muggleborn kid walk into that deathtrap ? HELL NO !

so
my theory is that the sorting hat might be at play here. what if he
was mindful of the issue when he as sorting students ? tried to
discourage them to go there ?

i know about this issue : my mother tried to deter me from
applying to a certain college because it used to have very far-rights
groups on the campus – but this is not the place for my own college
issues. my point is : that is something that happen. that’s
realistic.

ihis
is just a theory, i’ll admit i didn’t go looking for proofs all over
the books. maybe people can find clues to show that’s it untrue ( and
if you do please do share them ! i love meta discussions, as
long as they stay polite ) but it really seems logical to me that
people would try and protect muggleborn children from taking this
risk

The Girl Who Discovered The World

Or : “The Life Of Andromeda Tonks : Part Two”

  • andromeda’s first months in hogwarts were extremely difficult
  • first of all, she realized her sister didn’t always want to hang out with her like they used to
  • she was always with her own friends, telling andromeda to just go and make some on our own, but andromeda didn’t know how to do that
  • she had never talked to any other children than her sisters
  • she spent a lot of time alone in the park or in the dorm, both avoiding other kids and hoping they’ll talk to her
  • her other issue was classes
  • she was good in charms, but was pretty bad in any other subject
  • because she still couldn’t read a book
  • if she focused enough, she could read a page in five minutes, but it left her exhausted and on the verge of tears
  • she barely slept at night when she had an assignement, and her final results were always poor
  • her parents weren’t glad about this
  • in her three first months, she received  four howlers
  • she was constantly stressed out and sometimes cried herself to sleep
  • bella tried to make her feel better the first times, but eventually grew tired of it and told her sister to just make efforts
  • so andromeda pushed herself to her limits to make her family happy
  • she started to sleep and eat less
  • even when she hadn’t any homeworks, she still read her notes again and again
  • but her grades still weren’t good enough
  • and andromeda was so scared of what would happen when she’ll go back to her parents for the holidays
  • they were going to kill her
  • she dreaded her return so much she had nightmares about it
  • but someone noticed her state
  • it wasn’t a teacher or the school healer – andromeda still knew how to act okay in front of other people, thanks to her parents
  • it was another terrified young slytherin girl
  • her name was ayleth, and she was in the same dorm as andromeda
  • she heard the cry, she noticed all the signs of andromeda’s problems
  • so she did what andromeda both wanted and avoided
  • she talked to her
  • at first of casual things
  • like the quidditch team, or the boys in their year
  • and andromeda grew attached to the girl
  • she was sweet, but she could make the meanest comments when she disliked something
  • she loved to read, and told andromeda stories from what she read
  • always adding her personnal elements
  • so after a month or so, andromeda started to open up to her
  • telling her everything about her problems with homeworks and her sister
  • but something kept her from telling her about how things were at home
  • ayleth immediatly seemed understanding and compassionate
  • once she saw by herself that andromeda simply could not read, she took the matter in her own hands and read to her the pages they needed for their assignements
  • she would help andromeda to write too, and congratulated her everytime she made progresses
  • andromeda, after years of idealizing bella, discovered ayleth was actually her favorite person in the world
  • whenever she got an okay grade, she immediatly went to show her friend
  • and when she found out she was pretty okay at flying, ayleth helped her to practice and to get better
  • ayleth was also the one who introduced andromeda to physical touch
  • althrough andromeda didn’t like hugs that much, she found them comforting when she received an howler
  • whenever they split up for the holidays, they wrote each other one letter a day
  • andromeda talked about her friend to bella
  • but most of the time bella ignored her to talk about her own friends and life
  • andromeda didn’t understand what was going on with her sister
  • but it was okay, because she had ayleth
  • this is how andromeda survived her first year
  • despite her low grades, her parents, bella and everything, she was happy
  • but at the beginning of her second year, she noticed something was off with ayleth
  • she tried to make her talk about it, but ayleth always found a way to change the subject
  • until one day andromeda found her crying in the bathroom
  • and ayleth finally confessed her secret
  • she wasn’t a pureblood
  • her dad was a muggleborn and her mum was a muggle
  • her father had warned her about the racism in the wizarding world, so she told everyone her family was foreign and pureblood, so that was why no one knew them
  • but she couldn’t lie to andromeda
  • andromeda didnt know what to do
  • her parents never mentionned the possibility of a mudblood in slytherin
  • from what she understood, mudbloods could immediatly be recognized
  • and they weren’t supposed to be as sweet and clever than ayleth
  • andromeda had no idea what to do
  • she wanted to ask a thousand questions about how and why
  • but she knew questions were better unasked
  • so she didn’t say anything
  • and she left
  • and as she shut er best friend out of her life, she thought her parents would be proud of her
  • hadn’t  she done everything they wanted her to do ?
  • and if she heard sobs from ayleth’s bed at night, well, no one could prove she had actually heard them
  • things were better this way for everyone, she knew
  • she had a great family, and the black were so noble she could probably make other friends along the other pureblood kids
  • she knew she had a perfect life
  • she knew there was nothing to complain about
  • she knew she did the right thing
  • she knew she was on the good way for her parents to love her one day
  • she knew there was nothing wrong with her
  • and if from times to times, she felt as if she was wrong, well, she brushed away the thought and shut up, like she learned to do
