29 – “You can lie to yourself but you can’t lie to me.”
(i already did 11, so i decided not to include it? sorry, i just had more inspiration with combining the other two. also apparently im really going with that whole new writing style, huh. nice)
______
Masks. They were all there ever were to see. Remus Lupin was a man of secrets, and every single one of them piled up until the blur that was his truth lied invisible to everyone, even Remus himself.
“You hide in jokes and sarcasm, but I can see how broken you are.” Sirius’ voice felt soft and secure, but Remus knew the words meant threat. No one could see what was in between those masks, those thousands of lies that protected him.
“You can lie to yourself, but you can’t lie to me.” The softness, again. Remus’ firm faith in his parents’ advice to never let others know faltered. Sirius’ voice was intoxicating, like a poison running through the cracks in his shield of acting and lying and pretending.
After all, he didn’t even know who was this “him” he wanted to protect.
