One of my fears is that my characterization is awful and when people think of me they think of those “fanon character vs. canon character” memes.
STRONG MOOD
That’s actually why I absolutely hate those memes.
Because any character is going to be different in a fanfic than they are in the canon. Hell, characters in canon are very different depending on the writers for an episode, or the directors of a movie installment.
No two people write exactly the same, which is good! My Logan will never be exactly like someone else’s Logan, and my Logan in @dragons-of-dracaren is very different from my Logan in Getting to Know Yourself.
And every fanfic, every single one, extrapolates from the existing canon.
You take what is important to you about the character, you take the circumstances you’ve put them in, the background you’ve given them, and you figure out who they are from there.
If someone doesn’t agree with your choices, fine! They aren’t you, they don’t have to–they can write their own interpretation. But that doesn’t make yours wrong.
We write stories for what we don’t see in canon. So here? That means a lot of angst, because the Sanders Sides vids don’t have a lot of real angst. So is Logan insecure about his place? Maybe not, in the videos. But you can absolutely use the hints and moments Thomas and Joan have put in there to explore what it would be like if he was. That’s valid! That’s awesome.
What’s the point of writing these characters if you’re not going to do some things differently than Thomas and Joan do? If you didn’t want to explore, you could just watch the videos again.
So please, please…don’t worry! Don’t let it stop you writing. Don’t let it stop you loving the versions of the characters you’ve created.
Don’t let a stupid meme destroy something that brings you joy.
Virgil will always be a Soft Woobie in my fanfic and no one will ever make me feel ashamed of that. That’s what I want to write. You can come along for the ride or not, but don’t shame me for it.
