Remus goes through a great deal of trouble to make himself non-threatening, both as a man and as a werewolf, whether people know what he is or not. The majority of the modifiers to his person or actions in the books are things like warm, mild, and calm. I’ve seen somewhere that the phrase most paired with him is ‘Lupin smiled.’ He is always patient, always kind. The one time he is threatening, when Harry can see the shadow of the wolf in him, is when he is beside himself with guilt and terror at the thought of having inflicted himself and illness on Tonks and his unborn child, when his self hatred and doubt are so overwhelming that it lashes out at someone other than himself.
Remus goes out of his way to make others feel safe, because he rarely feels that way himself.
