Before a party, Marauders’ 5th year

“Sirius ? Are you ready to go ?” Remus called from the dorm room.

“Er, yeah, coming.” Sirius, however, made no move to go. He was staring at his reflection in the mirror, his lipstick still in his hand. He was hesitant. The vamp red one was his favorite to wear, but it was also the more noticeable one. He looked down at all his make up items, which were scattered next to the small sink.

Suddenly, the door opened, interrupting Sirius’ thought process.

“Still not done ? You’ve been in here for more than an hour, love, and the party is starting soon.” Remus wrapped his arms around the smaller boy’s waist and kissed the top of his head.

“I’m just… Not sure what kind of lipstick I want.” It was a semi-lie, he realized. He wasn’t sure about any of this.

“Well this one,” Remus pointed at the one in Sirius’ hand, “is my all-time favorite, but the peachy one looks super good too. But you know more about these things than I do.” When he saw that Sirius wasn’t answering, he tightened his grip around him and whispered. “Love, what’s wrong ?”

“I- I don’t know.” Sirius felt frustrated, unable to find his words. “It’s just so, so visible ! It’s gonna be so obvious that I’m wearing makeup and everyone will see and-” Oh god, he was tearing up. “I know I wore some in public before, but usually it’s only fondation or a bit of mascara. Stuffs no one could see.” He turned away from his own reflection, deciding that the floor was a much better sight. “Maybe I should just wipe everything off…”

He went to grab his cleanser bottle, but Remus stopped his motion. “You look absolutely beautiful, with or without makeup, and it’s your decision whether you want to wear some or not. But please, don’t let people’s opinions stop you from doing this. You know James, Pete and I are ready to punch whoever says anything, right ? Not that anyone will.”

“I know I shouldn’t care but-” Sirius silently begged Merlin to save him from sobbing. He didn’t need to look anymore pathetic.

“But you do, and that’s okay.” Remus stared at the ceiling for a few seconds, sign that he was plotting something. Then he turned to his boyfriend again and grinned. “You know what ? I think I’ll wear some too. Put it on me.”

“W-what ? But – you don’t even like wearing lipstick ! And you hate attention !”

“Yeah, well you’re always going on and on about how I’m so beautiful and everyone should admire me, so. Now is your chance to prove you were saying the truth.” Sirius noticed that there was a touch of insecurity, underneath the playfulness.

He frowned. “I can’t ask you to that.”

“You aren’t asking me, I’m asking you. Now grab that lipstick and put in on me.” He ended his sentence by burying his head in his boyfriend’s hair. At this point, Sirius’ mood felt lighter already.

“Alright,” he smiled. “If you wear some, I will too. Just… stay with me, during the party ?” Remus nodded, dropping a kiss on Sirius’ neck. “Shall I apply some eyeliner too ?”

“No thanks, you know how often I rub my eyes, I’ll just smudge it all over. Just the lips please.” They both separated from their hug so that Sirius could start and apply the lipstick. It looked beautiful on Remus – though Sirius might have been a bit biased on that one. “You know what I like the best, about us wearing matching lipstick ?” He smiled teasingly. “When we kiss, it won’t mess it up.”

Sirius laughed. “Okay, that is not how it works. But I appreciate the feeling.”

“Well, you’ll just have to put it on so we can test that together.” Remus winked and Sirius felt a heavy blush spreading all over his face, and then laughed again.

Because with his boyfriend by his side, he didn’t feel threatened anymore.
