i’m always wary of gay fanfictions where the two protagonists are both allo cis gay men.

Serious question: Why? Bad experiences? 😦

I never even read tags (except for Major Character Death) because I’ve found amazing fics with pretty much any combination of sexualities that I can think of, including a lot of allo ones…

bad experiences, yes.

from what i’ve seen it’s almost systematic that fics with no trans/nonbi/bi/pan/ace/aro rep is going to shit on another part of the LGBTQIA+ community at some point or that the author is a cishet girl fetishizing gay men or shits on women.

of course there are exceptions ! but i just got used to expect this kind of attitude from this kind of characterization

I don’t know how many times I’ve been reading a fic and been taken out of the story by an innocuous joke about women being shrews, or masculinity being linked to dick size, or asexuals being freaks, or the use of a slur, etc. I still cringe when I think about a story that I absolutely love, but will never be able to rec due to a gratuitous slur that the writer damn well had to have known was offensive.

As a writer myself, I try to make a point to be as inclusive as possible, but sometimes it’s hard to see our own work objectively. This is part of the value of having beta readers. I’ve had some problematic elements in my writing pointed out to me pre-publication, and I’m very grateful that I got the chance to fix them, not only because I don’t want to be an ass, but also because the story and characterization were vastly improved by those slight changes.

That being said, anyone who reads my stories- please feel free to send me an ask or a message if there is something that you think could be phrased or presented better. I will always be accepting and grateful for constructive criticism, especially since I know that it’s not something that’s owed to me.
