——————–

Severus knew that the Marauders often snuck out at night. He didn’t know why, and didn’t care to know. But he wanted to get them into so much trouble they wouldn’t be able to sneak out again.

Today, the sun had just begun to set and Potter had left the castle. Severus had seen him from the Astronomy Tower. And yes, Severus was breaking rules too, but he didn’t care. His anger had got the better of him and he followed Potter, a few steps behind him. Suddenly, Potter turned around and looked around suspiciously.

Severus held his breath. He didn’t think Potter had seen him, but he wanted to be safe. If he was to catch them in the act, he would have to remain hidden.

Seemingly satisfied, Potter continued walking, and Severus continued to follow him. They came to an area surrounded by many large bushes. The sun had almost gone down and a pink light filled the air. Severus watched as Potter ran into a small clearing, and he hid behind a bush to see what was happening without being seen.

And then he saw her. Lily. Standing in the fading light, her long, red hair dancing in the wind, waiting for…Potter. She was dating Potter! Severus was far too shocked and saddened to move. He watched as his bully was enveloped in the arms of the only person who Severus had ever cared about, the only person who had ever cared about Severus.

As they stood there, framed in the sunset, he felt a stab of fury. And though he didn’t want to watch as their lips met, his feet were rooted to the ground as firmly as the bush he was concealed behind. He looked away. He wanted to come out of hiding, beat Potter up, duel with him and punish him for everything he had ever done.

Instead, when he could move again, he took a step back, telling himself that this was what Lily wanted and so he shouldn’t do anything about it. As he put his foot down, a twig snapped and the couple broke apart. They looked straight at him.

“Well hello, Snivellus. I thought you were following me,” sneered Potter. But Severus barely heard him. His black eyes met Lily’s green ones, and even without using Legilimency, Severus knew that she longer wanted to associate with him. She had spoken to him many times earlier about his friends and now, he knew that she would never want to have anything to do with him anymore.

As the full moon rose behind her, Lily’s eyes grew sad, Potter looked angry, and Severus couldn’t bear it anymore. He turned and ran into the grounds, towards the Forbidden Forest. And he just ran and ran, the shrubbery scratching at his robes and the nettles stinging his skin. His tears blurred his vision and he tripped over a large root.

Suddenly, he felt himself being lifted off the ground by his left ankle.

“Well, Snivellus! I see you’re going for a walk in the Forest! But isn’t the poor crybaby scared? No?”

Black was standing below him, and his upside down face was contorted with laughter. Pettigrew was standing beside him, laughing dutifully.

“Wormtail, go get Moony. Prongs promised he would be here by now. Or no…just go in. Don’t get him out.” There was a small smile on Black’s face as Pettigrew scampered off. Severus fell on his head as Black released him from the spell that he, Severus, had invented. Normally he would have duelled with Black, but he just didn’t have the strength anymore.

So when Black pulled him up and propelled him towards the grounds again, he didn’t protest. He just walked. Until he was standing in front of a gargantuan tree. And not just any tree. It was the Whomping Willow, which for some unfathomable reason had been planted in the school grounds. The Headmaster might just be a little insane.

Initially, Severus thought that Black was going to levitate him into the branches. He didn’t care. Nothing mattered anymore. Instead, Black spoke to him.

“Come on, Snivvey. Show you a secret. Peter went in there just now. I’m going too. Want to come?”

“Um…”

“Aw, don’t be such a sissy. Go on. You go first.”

Black levitated a stick towards a knothole at the base of the tree. Instantly, the branches froze. Black wanted him to go under the tree and into a hole at the base.

“Come on, then.” When Severus didn’t move, Black suddenly turned nasty again and shoved him forwards. Severus stumbled ahead and dropped to the floor. He slithered on his belly into the hole and could feel the cool earth below him. He could fall asleep here. The way the tunnel hugged him was soothing and comforting, and he wanted to just lie here forever, with nobody torturing and taunting him.

Suddenly, his peace was broken as Black kicked the soles of his feet. The cruel idiot had taken off his, Severus’s, shoes so the kick would hurt more. Git. He started moving ahead again and the tunnel gradually widened and the ceiling rose and he found himself standing in a dimly lit room. Before he had any chance of doing anything, a giant grey creature had leapt at him and pinned his shoulders to the floor.

“Moony, no!” Potter transformed as he yelled and within moments he was a magnificent stag, using his antlers to push “Moony"–Lupin!–off Severus.

The werewolf grumbled and then howled. He swatted at the stag, but Potter held him down and made whinnying noises until the beast calmed down. Then the stag turned human again and gently shoved Severus to the opening he had just come through. He was too stunned to say anything. Potter had just saved him. And Lupin was a werewolf. And Black had known this would happen and yet he had pushed him into the room. The anger and hatred inside him bubbled.

As soon as he, Potter and Pettigrew had left the tunnel and stood in the grounds, Potter slapped Black across the face. Pettigrew began breathlessly recounting what Potter had done, how he had saved “Snivellus”. And suddenly, Severus broke.

“Sectumsempra!”

Blood spewed from Potter’s face. Severus wanted to kill him, but he couldn’t, because he had saved his life, and some powerful force prevented him from hurting Potter anymore. He turned and fled back to the castle.

The next day, he passed Potter and Lily in the corridor. Lily was listening to Potter recount what had happened. The show-off. Severus looked at Lily’s face to see her expression. She gave him an ugly look, and then as he moved away from them, he heard her mutter, “The little shit.” She stroked a faint scar on Potter’s cheek from the curse that Severus had cast the previous evening.

Severus had never felt so empty before.
