a little story about rape culture

when i was 14, our history teacher decided to tell us a bit about rape in France.

he gave us the stats and told us one woman out of ten have been raped in her life.

we were twenty girls in the class and of course the first thing we thought was : “two of us are going to be raped in their lives” – a very cheerful moment indeed

and it was all we were talking about after classes with my girl friends, and we were really worried. and i had one boy friend, and he was honestly shocked and concerned too.

but as we were walking to our next class, i asked “okay but does it mean one man out of ten is a rapist ?”

okay i just feel the need to highlight here that there are girl rapists as well but they are less than 1% of them so my question was still valid

i didn’t say it aloud, but the hint behind the question was : “will two of the boy in our class become rapists ?”

my friend had a nervous laugh, and told me that no, there were probably most rape survivors than rapists because one rapist could rape several women

but a woman can be raped several times in her life as well isn’t it ? she can be raped by several men ? and if we had the stats on boys who had been raped as well ( which the teacher didn’t give us of c o u r s e ), how were the stats in the end ? and the hint again : how many of these boys in my class, most of them being nice people i liked, were going to become rapists ?

but again, my friend, and all my other friends ( boy or girl ) i talked to this about brushed it off and said that one rapist could rape several people.

so it was great to know that two of the girls in my class would be raped, but it would have been great to know that two of the boys in my class will become rapists if we didn’t change the way to teach kids about sexual assault.

so if you are teaching your sons or male students about that, don’t forget that you stastically probably have a future rapist in front of you.
