Oh, what can I say about Regulus Black….
He’s much quieter than his brother. Sirius is loud and always drawing attention to himself. People think it’s just because Sirius is an obnoxious attention whore who loves the spot light, but it actually stems from the need to protect Regulus.
Regulus’ magic didn’t show as early as most children in The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, and that simply would not do. Sirius had seen what happened to squibs from family’s like his own, so he would often act out and draw as much of his parents attention to himself as possible so they wouldn’t have the extra moment to notice Regulus’ supposed lack of magical abilities.
Of course, Regulus eventually did show his magic, but because he was a late bloomer he can sometimes be a little self conscious about his abilities and actually is quite surprised when he manages some more advanced spells. He’s much more talented than he believes himself to be.
He’s jealous of Sirius’ outgoingness and his ability to be himself without concern for what others think. That jealousy sometimes shows itself as anger. His anger can be just as dangerous as Sirius’, but it takes longer to get him to the point where it explodes.
He doesn’t have many close friends, mostly because he doesn’t feel like he belongs anywhere. This is another reason he finds himself jealous of Sirius. Sirius has great friends, a newfound family and dozens of admirers. Regulus has the quidditch team, he supposes, and his cousins and their friends. Their friends sort of frighten him a little, but he would never admit that.
Quidditch is one of the only things that actually brings him real joy. He’d like to play professionally some day, but his parents would never approve of that.
He’s also rather good at care for magical creatures. Animals seem to trust him. Even the merpeople, who usually only scowl at the other Slytherins that tap on the glass windows in the common room for their attention, nod politely to him and sometimes even manage a small smile in his direction.
He never feels at home in Slytherin, where everyone talks in hushed voices about the impending war and who’s side to choose. Everyone expects things from him, since he’s the new heir with Sirius being disinherited. He feels pressured because he’s only a child and he really has no political views at all other than the ones being forced upon him by his family or the ones Sirius has tried to throw in his face. He wishes he could just be left out of it.
When his parents announce that they wish for him to join the ranks of Voldemort alongside his cousins, he wishes he could tell them no. Something about it doesn’t feel quite right, but at the same time it’s his chance to finally prove he can amount to something other than living in his brother’s shadow. He can make his family proud where his brother was a disappointment. He could be important in some way.
He realizes almost as soon as the Dark Mark is burnt into his teenage flesh that he has made the wrong choice…and it’s too late to back out now…if he wants to live, anyway. Also, I personally HC Reg as asexual. In case anyone was wondering…
Even though I have enjoyed some Jegulus fics from time to time.
asexual regulus is my favorite headcanon about him. that doesn’t stop him from being in love with james and lily.
