I’m always amused when people’s reaction to any criticism of Harry Potter is « Well, that’s the way JKR wrote it! » Because yes, yes it is. That’s the problem.

fandomsandfeminism:

It could have been written different.

Harry Potter could have been black.

Ron Weasley would have been a trans girl.

Hermione Granger could have been bisexual.

Neville Longbottom could have been autistic.

Luna Lovegood could have been in a wheelchair.

Fred and George could have been gender fluid.

Tonks could have been a lesbian.

Remus could have had OCD.

Sirius could have been Pakistani.

It could have been different. It could have been diverse. It could have given actual weight to its own anti-discrimination messages.

But it didn’t, because JKR wrote it that way. That’s sort of the issue.

representation isn’t just for books and movies who focuse on these issues. It is for every single book and movie existing.

because queer people do mean it when they say it would have helped them to figure themselves out sooner.

or POC would have felt more accepted if they were more characters of colour.

or disabled/neurodivergent/… people would have felt like heroes for a moment ( and that’s from a girl who cried of joy when she realized annabeth chase had adhd too )

representation fucking matters.
