It wasn’t long after Remus Lupin and Sirius Black became friends that Sirius realised how bad Remus’ nightmares could get. He was awoke by screaming once, to which he immediately grabbed his wand and raced to Remus, where he heard the screams coming from. He frantically asked what was wrong, and Remus went bright red. “I’m sorry, Sirius, I just have nightmares sometimes, I’m sorry” he mumbled, clearly embarrassed. Sirius reassured him that everything was okay, unaware of how James and Peter managed to sleep through such a noise. “Hey, Remy, how about I read you a story, yeah? I’ll stay here and read to you until you doze off.” Remus started saying that he couldn’t ask Sirius to do that, because ‘it’s double potions tomorrow!! you need your sleep if you want to pass the test!!’. Sirius made Remus lie back down, and he grabbed a book out of Remus’ chest of them. He made sure the book was okay, took the desk chair, sat right by Remus’ bed, and started reading softly, but loud enough for him to hear. Sirius read Remus a story every night that he had a nightmare. The nightmares stopped occurring on nights that Sirius read to Remus before he’d been to sleep.

One night Sirius had to stay overnight in the hospital wing because of how sick he had become. Remus woke up that night screaming louder than ever before. James and Peter heard this time, frantically rushing over to a screaming Remus, tears in his eyes and flailing his arms all over the place. Neither of the boys could calm him down, so Peter went for McGonagall while James stayed with Remus. Even she couldn’t calm him down. She ran for Miss Pomfrey, telling her what had happened, which is how Sirius knew. He ran ahead of McGonagall, sped through the entire castle until he reached the Gyffindor dorms, where he found Remus still crying and shrieking every now and then. Upon seeing Sirius, Remus immediately began to slightly calm down. Sirius shooed everyone out into the common room, moved the desk chair over to Remus’ bed and began to read. Remus was still crying, even while Sirius was reading, so Sirius, after making sure it was okay, slipped into the bed next to Remus, and began reading again. By the end of the story, they’d found themselves lying comfortable together, one of Sirius’ arms around Remus, and Remus’ head on Sirius’ chest, Remus fast asleep. Instead of waking the latter up, Sirius used Remus’ wand to open the door to the common room, allowing the others in. When they saw Remus asleep, they all immediately wen quiet. “Good job, Mr. Black. I’ll be leaving now. Good night, boys.” whispered McGonagall.

From that night on, Sirius slipped into Remus’ bed and read a story to Remus every night. It was like this that the two boys had their first kiss. Sirius slipped into Remus’ bed, and read the story, as normal. But right before Remus went sleep, he said, “Sirius, com’ere”, and so Sirius went closer. Remus slightly pecked him on the lips and said, “thank you for reading to me”. They then kissed every night right before Remus went sleep. It was also like this that, in fourth year, they first said they love each other. And it was also like this, in seventh year, that Sirius told Remus that someday, they were going to get married.

Remus had a nightmare on his twentieth birthday. Sirius woke up, no longer needing to slip into Remus’ bed, as it was also his. He began to read a story. A love story, about a young couple who slowly fell more and more in love with each other. It was like this that Sirius proposed to Remus, and it was like this that Remus said yes.

this is the best thing ever. in the whole world.

and i can just imagine sirius raising from his hospital bed because “MY BOYFRIEND NEEDS ME I MUST GO”
