Remadora: A Rant of Sorts

captofthesswolfstar:

Okay, I want to start this off by saying that this is only my opinion and it’s not meant to insult anyone who supports the Remus/Tonks ship. I know that it is canon (unfortunately) but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a good thing.

I know what you’re thinking. I’m pretty much the captain of the S.S. Wolfstar, and yes, I will go down with my ship, but my feelings towards Remadora have absolutely nothing to do with Sirius Black, believe it or not. My issue actually has to do with Molly Weasley and Tonks herself.

We’ll start with the least offensive, but still sort of bothersome, topic of age. Nymphadora Tonks graduated Hogwarts the year before Harry started, making her 7 years older than Harry Potter. Remus Lupin was 20 when Harry was born, making him 13/14 years older than Tonks. Now, age is just a number and by the time they were married, Tonks was 21 and Remus was 34 so no, there was nothing particularly wrong with that but it is quite a difference. A difference that Remus admits he has a problem with.

34 is a relatively young man. My fiance is 34 and let me tell you, he’s a giant child. But Remus has life experience that a 21 year old cannot even begin to imagine. Yes, Tonks is fighting in this war too, but Remus has been through a war already and he has lost EVERYTHING and EVERYONE. He’s been poor, unemployed, close to homeless and of course discriminated against because his blood status and the fact that he is a werewolf. He’s 34 going on 70.

Also, Andromeda is Sirius’ favorite cousin. Sirius was 14/15 when Nymphadora was born, he most likely did some babysitting in her early childhood and Remus and James were probably there for it. REMUS PROBABLY BABYSAT HIS WIFE AT SOME POINT. IT IS VERY PROBABLE.

But like I said, the age difference is actually not something that really bothers me. I can see past that easily, I’m marrying a man that is quite a few years older than me (not 14 years older, but older.) so, I don’t judge the age gap much.

My issue starts with Tonks’ attitude throughout Half Blood Prince. When we meet Nymphadora Tonks in Order of the Phoenix, she is a spunky, bright, confident young witch with spiky pink hair that is truly a force to behold. Then she turns up in HBP and she’s just….blah. Her hair is brown, she’s depressed and mopey and Harry actually thinks that she’s upset about Sirius’ death, which makes perfect sense. No. Turns out she’s lovesick for a person we never even see her interact with. EVER. There was no build up whatsoever to this relationship. I’m sorry, but I personally feel like this was thrown into the mix so randomly!

Let’s look at Remus during this time: He’s looking worse than ever and that’s to be expected. These are hard times, after all! Voldemort is at large once more, he’s been publically outed as a werewolf and probably can’t find any work, not to mention is boyfriend Best Friend just died. But now add that he is being guilted from several parties about not wanting to start a romantic relationship. As if Tonks being so distraught over his rejection isn’t enough, here comes Busybody Molly Weasley to make things ten times worse! She’s making backhanded comments, shooting him dirty looks, trying to force them to be alone together. Like…no means no, ladies….seriously.

To be completely honest, had they backed off and let things happen a little more naturally I would not have nearly as much of an issue with this pairing. I DO like Tonks and I do think that Remus did enjoy her company and could have eventually come around but instead they pushed and pushed until he just sort of….agreed?

And then his whole personality changes, he starts making rash decisions. He claims that he is worried about Teddy being a werewolf but he isn’t necessarily careful? Lycanthropy aside, this is not the time to be having kids. WRAP YOUR TOOL REMUS!

So he’s impregnated this girl that he wasn’t even 100% sure he wanted to be with and what’s the first thing he does? He tries to join Harry on a dangerous mission. This doesn’t seem very Remus Lupin to me. In fact, this seems a lot more Sirius Black. And Sirius’ impulsive thinking was his downfall and a desperate cry for help.

I AM NOT SAYING THAT REMUS DID NOT LOVE TONKS. I AM NOT INVALIDATING THEIR RELATIONSHIP OR THEIR CHILD. But the relationship made me extremely uncomfortable and the way Tonks expressed herself about her feelings for Remus sort of reminded me of Snape’s obsession with Lily Evans. Stop. Sulking. That’s not the way to get what you want. Show him how great you are and make him interested! Don’t just cry to him until he agrees to date you.

All of this being said, I do think that it does prove one thing (if you ship Wolfstar)….Remus has a TYPE. And that’s the rebellious, feisty members of the Black family.

WRAP YOUR TOOL REMUS I’ve been laughing for five good minutes
