“How could anyone follow him?” Lily asked nervously, wringing her hands together as she stared at the corner of her plain white wall.
James and Sirius looked down at the paper that lied on the floor where it had landed after Lily had thrown it. On the front page was and article about the suggestion of a new law where they remove all the muggleborns from Hogwarts “for their safety”. It was clear in the article that safety wasn’t what they author had in mind at all, but was actually hoping that muggleborns would be cast out and become extinct in the wizarding world. This proposal had been received quite well at the ministry, and there were talks of turning into a law sometime within the next year.
The two men’s eyes rose from the paper and landed on each other, their minds racing a thousand meter per minute, neither sure what they should say.
“They truly believe in what he’s saying is right,” Sirius finally answered, feeling as though he were to blame.
“But how?” Lily snapped, turning around in her seat to face the two men, “How could they believe in such hateful words? How could they believe that just because I’m a – a – a mudblood that I’m worth less than they are?”
“Please don’t say that word,” James pleaded with her, feeling uncomfortable.
Lily ignored him, “I can’t help how I was born. It’s not my fault I was born with non-magic parents. And why should that matter anyway? I have magic now! I’m just as much of a witch as they rest of them.”
“We agree,” Sirius reminded her as James nodded his head vehemently.
“I just,” she huffed in despair, letting her head fall into her hands as she took several deep breaths before peeking up and admitting, “I just keep hoping that enough people will see the corruption that it happening in our government and that they will realize that Voldemort is a fanatic that must be stopped. But, instead – “
“Instead it feels like the Ministry is redecorating their office for him to come in and have a seat at their table,” James finished for her, stepping forward to grab her hands and hold them in his own, “I know, it’s hard, but we must have hope.”
Lily tore her hands out of James’ grasp and stood up, pacing in the room, “Hope? How am I supposed to have hope when there are wizards out there actively trying to kill me?”
She turned to look at James, placing her hands over her bulging stomach, and pleaded, “How am I supposed to explain this to our son? That the world I’m bringing him into is dark and dreadful? How can I have hope for his future, when my own future is bleak?”
James looked down at her round belly before dropping his head to look at the ground in defeat.
Sirius stood a little taller, “You have hope knowing that you’re not alone. You have James and me with you every step of the way. You have hope knowing that there are others just like us who are fighting back. We will not take this sitting down, but we will fight until the war is done.”
“And if he wins?” Lily challenged.
“Then we continue to do what we can to make our home a safer place,” James added, “I will do whatever it takes to protect you.”
He stepped forward, placing his hands over hers where they were resting on her belly, “Both of you. I promise. And I have no doubts that you plan on doing the same for us.”
Lily let a sob out as she reached out and grabbed James shirt to pull him closer.
“Don’t loose hope,” he whispered into her hair, “It may seem as though this fight will never end and that coming back from this is impossible, but I promise you that we can get through this, and that everything will work out in the end.”
Lily nodded in his chest, reaching her hand out and grabbing blindly in Sirius’ direction.
Sirius stepped forward, allowing her to grab his shirt and pull him into the hug as well.
“We will continue fighting,” Sirius promised her, “And we will make this world a better place for little Elvendork.”
Lily sobbed, letting out a wet laugh, “I am not naming my son Elvendork.”
“Why not?” James asked with a smile on his face, grateful to hear a small laugh from his wife, “It’s unisex.”
She chuckled again, slowly taking deep breaths in and out as she let the two boys hug her close.
“Thank you,” she muttered softly into the fabric of James’ shirt against his chest.
“Of course,” James answered immediately.
“We will win,” Sirius promised her, “You’ll see.”
